MILESTONES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF UYO
What is today called the University of Uyo has a humble but unique historical metamorphosis. The campus where the University of Uyo started began in the 1930's as a practising school and became a Teacher Training College in the 1940's. It was upgraded to Advanced Teachers' Training College in the 1960's.
In 1975 it became a College of Education and was converted to the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) in 1983. As God would have it, in 1991 the erstwhile University of Cross River State assumed a new status and nomenclature called the University of Uyo – a Federal University. It is a citadel of learning, research and community development.
The University of Uyo is located in the heart of Akwa Ibom State, and Uyo is easily accessible by road and by air via Ibom International Airport in Akwa Ibom State and Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, in neighbouring Cross River State. The University of Uyo operates from three campuses: the Town Campus with its Annex, the Main Campus and Ime Umanah Campus. Though a third generation University in Nigeria, the University of Uyo is competing favourably with most first generation universities in Nigeria and has recorded various strides.
- It is one of the nine Federal Universities selected for e-learning by the Federal Government.
- It is one of the two universities selected for the study of Space Technology.
- It is the 10th most preferred University out of the 117 universities by UTME candidates.
- The only university in Nigeria where Computational Language Documentation and Technology is studied at Masters and PhD. levels in conjunction with Belfield University, Germany.
- It has the largest academic programmes with full accreditation.
- UNIUYO is the Information Technology School of the year (2012).
