Giant crocodile takes to surf, prompting beach closure in Australia

Experts hope to capture and relocate 12-foot reptile, to keep waters safe

It’s hard to imagine a creature more menacing than a great white shark swimming in the surf, but a giant crocodile comes close.
An estimated 12-foot crocodile was spotted cruising in the swells this past week at Cable Beach in Broome, Western Australia, prompting officials to close the beach to swimmers and surfers for a day.
It’s unclear what lured the reptile into the surf zone, but the unusual sighting generated quite the spectacle.

Sharon Scoble, a Broome local, captured the images that accompany this report after receiving a call from her son, who spotted the croc while driving to the beach.

Scoble told Perth Now: “It was absolutely awesome. But it wouldn’t have been so awesome if I was swimming and noticed it.”
The croc remained in the surf zone for most of the day, before presumably finding its way back to one of the creeks. (The Broome region’s saltwater crocodiles typically remain in inland waterways.)

“Rangers were making sure no one was going near it,” Scoble said.
Dave Woods, a Parks and Wildlife officer, said this croc might be the same animal that appeared in the surf in December.
Woods added that the croc has been targeted for capture and will be relocated to a remote wilderness park, leaving Cable Beach swimmers with only one genuine worry: sharks.

Bayern Munich are beatable, says Neuer

Bayern Munich are beatable, says Neuer

The former Schalke goalkeeper doubts the Bavarians will be able to replicate Real Madrid's 6-1 thrashing in midweek when they host die Knappen on Saturday

Manuel Neuer has insisted that Bayern Munich can be beaten by Schalke this weekend if they do not put in a top performance.

Jens Keller's men were humiliated in a 6-1 defeat at Veltins Arena in the Champions League in midweek, triggering jokes in social media that they could concede double figures on their visit to the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

The Bavarians are yet to lose in the league this season and have won all their home Bundesliga games, but Neuer, who made his name starring in goal for Schalke before he joined die Roten, thinks his old side have the attackers to hurt them in Munich if they do not bring their best form.

"They don't have the players to sit back and defend - their strength lies in attack," the Bayern shot-stopper told reporters on Thursday.

"Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Jefferson Farfan don't like to work in defence, they prefer to stay up front. The same goes for Max Meyer and Julian Draxler.

"We know we are beatable, we know it's dangerous to let things slide. The coach always has new challenges for us.

"We've just worked together with Pep Guardiola for more than half a year now, but he does not see us where he wants us to be. That's the positive aspect: there is still room for further development."

The ex-Veltins Arena goalkeeper suggested Schalke's hammering at the hands of Real Madrid was an anomaly and does not think it is likely that Bayern will replicate that result this weekend.

"I know them better then anyone else, of course," he continued. "They wanted to show a great match againt Madrid.

"If they had had a better day they could have competed. Of course you can accept losing against that team, but not like that.

"They've shown a good start in the Bundesliga. We don't plan to see them off with six goals though, we just want to win the match."

Bayern have an all-but-unassailable 19-point lead in the Bundesliga over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen after 22 matchdays.

Trabzonspor 0-2 Juventus (0-4 agg.): Vidal and Osvaldo strike as Bianconeri cruise in Turkey

Two goals in a bilstering opening half-hour were enough to seal an emphatic aggregate win for Antonio Conte's side as they kept their quest for Europa League glory alive

MAURICIO ISLA ARTURO VIDAL TRABZONSPOR JUVENTUS EUROPA LEAGUE 27022014

Trabzonspor after goals from Arturo Vidal and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo sealed a 2-0 second-leg win in their Europa League last-32 tie.

In an utterly breathless opening half, Juve - targeting a Serie A and Europa League double this season - set about their opponents like a team possessed in Thursday's second leg and would have been out of sight but for the heroics of goalkeeper Onur Kivrak.

But Kivrak could do nothing to prevent Vidal's 17th goal of the season after 19 minutes and Osvaldo capped a fine display in Turkey by heading in from close range just after the half-hour to confirm a convincing aggregate win.

It leaves the Italian champions on course for the dream final at their home ground, although first up are Serie A rivals Fiorentina, who inflicted Juve's only league defeat of the campaign when the sides met earlier this season.

Although Antonio Conte changed his forward line from Sunday's Torino victory, Juventus started strongly and almost went in front when Sebastian Giovinco fed Mauricio Isla in oceans of space on the right, but his shot was superbly tipped onto the post by Kivrak.

The onslaught continued from the visitors with Claudio Marchisio and Paul Pogba both testing Kivrak from long range.

Despite having the luxury of a two-goal cushion from the first leg, there was no let-up from Juve and Kivrak again kept his side in it by thwarting Leonardo Bonucci and then producing a fabulous reflex save from Isla's powerful 18-yard effort.

Federico Peluso forced the rebound home, but was flagged offside.

Juve finally got the goal their determined start deserved after 17 minutes. Giovinco played a neat one-two with Osvaldo, whose cross found the Italian 10 yards out. Giovinco's first-time shot produced an amazing point-blank save from Kivrak before Vidal smashed home the rebound.

Conte's men were rampant and doubled their advantage on the night after 33 minutes when Giovinco latched on to an inch-perfect pass before crossing for the unmarked Osvaldo to head home.

Such was the dominance of the away side that Conte was able to withdraw Pogba before half-time to rest the Frenchman for Sunday's trip to AC Milan.

The unrelenting pace of Juve's first-half performance subsided after the restart, but they still looked dangerous and the magnificent Giovinco's delicate effort had Kivrak beaten, but Aykut Demir got back to head clear.

Giovinco was denied again after 56 minutes when Osvaldo released the Italian in a lightning counterattack, but Kivrak stood tall and blocked the near post effort.

Both players really caught the eye and it was Osvaldo's turn to go close moments later when his quick footwork gave him space for a shot in the area before he lashed over.

Trabzonspor were never in the game and were restricted to long-range opportunities, such as the one that Marc Janko blazed over just after the hour mark.

Juve substitute Simone Padoin almost added a third late on, but Kivrak scrambled clear.

Eto’o won’t reply Mourinho

Samuel Eto'o
Samuel Eto’o says he will not ‘cause trouble’ by responding to comments made by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho about his age.

The Portuguese tactician was heard during a conversation about his lack of firepower at Stamford Bridge claiming that 32-year-old frontman Eto’o could be as old as 35.

The Cameroonian striker was offered the opportunity to reply following a UEFA Champions League outing at Galatasaray on Wednesday.

Eto’o was happy to joke about the issue with reporters, claiming he still has ‘juice’ and can keep scoring goals ‘until I am 50’.

He went on to explain to beINSports that while he was disappointed not to start Chelsea’s latest European outing, he has no axe to grind with his boss and will not be drawn into a debate regarding a discussion which Mourinho considered to be private.

Eto’o said, “I am Samuel Eto’o, to disturb me will take much more than this. I know my place and I won’t reply. I would have liked to be in the starting XI so I am disappointed to be on the bench, but I respect the choice of the coach.

“I came to Chelsea mainly because of Jose, because we have a great friendship. Things happen in life and you have to face them. But it doesn’t change the player I am and the career I have had. You want me to cause trouble by revealing all of my thoughts. I want us to go as far as possible in this competition and in peace.”

Soldiers flee as B’Haram kills 37 in Adamawa

Chief of Army Staff, General Kenneth Minimah
last Tuesday it was Yobe State where 59 schoolchildren were massacred. On Wednesday,  the bloodletting extended to Adamawa State where Boko Haram terrorists, armed with rocket-propelled grenades  nearly sacked  four  communities.

An official  death toll in the attacks  was  not available as of 9.40pm on Thursday. But  the  British Broadcasting Corporation Hausa Service put it at 37 while the Agence France Presse  reported 33.
Banks, shops, part of a local government secretariat  and houses were  reported to have  been  looted and burnt during the six-hour  simultenous  raids  on  the three communities –  Michika,         Gulak , Shuwa  and Krichinga – by  the militants.

It was gathered that  in Shuwa, Madagali Local Government Area,  a repeat  of the Yobe massacre was averted  when the  insurgents attacked the  Christians Teacher College,  Christian Secondary School    and a Catholic Convent.

A resident told The PUNCH that the head of the Christian Secondary School, on hearing gunshots in the community,  advised his  pupils to run into  nearby bushes to avoid being killed by the terrorists.
The resident, who declined to give his name, added that when the  hoodlums eventually  arrived and saw the school deserted,   they  burnt down almost all the structures on  the premises.
He however did not say if all the pupils came out of the bushes unhurt since the incident took place at night.

A pastor in Shuwa told the AFP that soldiers retreated when the armed insurgents invaded the community.

“When the soldiers at the military checkpoints saw the number of the attackers, they retreated into the nearby bushes as the gunmen operated without challenge during the operation that lasted throughout the night,” the  cleric said.
It was also  gathered that among the over 20 persons killed in Shuwa, was a priest at St. Augustine Catholic Church.

The home of a former commissioner in the state,  Idris Nuhu, was among those burnt in the community.
In Michika, Michika LGA,   another group of Boko Haram gunmen burnt three banks, a police station,   part of the Michika  LGA  secretariat  and shops.
A  resident, who identified himself simply  as Fide, told the News Agency of Nigeria, that   the attackers,   who arrived in  nine vans firing guns and throwing explosives, killed a banker and a villager.

Fide said, “They burnt three banks, a police station, shops and part of the Michika LGA  secretariat.
“One of the dead body is that of a  member of  staff   of the Bank of Agriculture.”
Some other  residents of Michika said they slept in the hills and nearby bushes  during  the mayhem that lasted for about five hours.

The  BBC Hausa Service quoted witnesses as saying that some of those killed in Michika and Shuwa either had gunshot wounds or   had their throats slit.
The Chairman of  the Michika LGA, Ulama Maina, confirmed to journalists that banks, police station, shops and some houses were torched.

Maina  however did not give  the  casualty figure.

The  spokesman  for the 23rd Armoured Brigade, Yola, Capt. Ja’afaru Nuhu, who also confirmed that    communities in Madagali and Michika LGAs were attacked, told NAN that  details of the incident  would be released at a later stage.

Grace Hassan, an indigene of  Michika,  told   The Punch that the attacks that started at about 8pm  lasted till 2am,   adding that information at her disposal indicated that the mayhem  sent fears into the hearts of residents of Lassa,  a neighbouring town in Borno State.

According to her, the  residents  of the community    fled   into the bushes to avoid being killed.
A resident of Lassa, Peter Satumari, said many of them  fled  their homes into the bushes when the sound of gunshots and explosives were  becoming unbearable.
Satumari said, “No  one could sleep because of the sound of gunshots which we thought were  being fired from   our village. We   had to  run into the bushes believing they might come to attack our houses.

“It was later  on Thursday  morning    that we  saw smoke billowing from afar and got to know there were  attacks in Shuwa, Gulak and Michika, all in  Adamawa State.”
It was also gathered that the sect attacked Krichinga, a village about five kilometres east of Shuwa. There,  four people  lost  their lives  and many were injured.
A furious  governor of the state Gov. Murtala Nyako  suggested there must be collusion with the Boko Haram terrorist network.

Nyako, a former navy chief of staff, said the attacks ridiculed President Goodluck Jonathan’s insistence that the military was winning the war against Islamic militants.
When Borno state Governor  Kashim Shettima  claimed  that Boko Haram fighters were  “better armed and better motivated,” than the troops fighting them,   Jonathan  upbraided him.
The Defence Headquarters  has however    launched what it described as   specialised campaign against the Boko Haram insurgents.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said during a  news  conference in Abuja on Thursday,   that the  campaign had  already taken off in  Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states  which are under emergency rule.
He explained  that   part of the arrangement  was  to pursue and  prevent the insurgents  from escaping from the country.

The Defence spokesman said that  terrorists fleeing towards Nigeria’s borders with Cameroun  had severely  attacked  some communities in desperation for food and money.
He said, “The purpose of this briefing is to intimate you with the elevation of counter terrorism campaign in the country. The new approach marks another phase in the operations designed to further contain the terrorists and their activities.

“The specialised campaign which has commenced is being undertaken simultaneously in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states. This operation is also in furtherance of efforts at apprehending the terrorists and ensuring they do not escape out of Nigeria as they are now desperate to do.
“Unfortunately, however, they have in the course of their flight towards various borders, continued to perpetrate mayhem as noticed in some parts of Adamawa State yesterday (Wednesday), where they attacked communities.

“In desperation for money and food, they looted and burnt banks, shops and filling stations along their way through Michika as they headed for  the Camerounian border.”
Olukolade said that three civilians and a soldier were killed in the attacks on the Adamawa communities  while six insurgents were gunned down and two captured alive.
He said that  the DHQ believed  that the insurgents who attacked   the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe State were the same people behind the Michika  onslaught.

Eto'o: I don't have to explain anything about my age

The Cameroon striker has hit out at suggestions that he is older than 32 after a private conversation involving Jose Mourinho was recorded by a French television station

Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o has hit out at allegations suggesting he is older than 32 years old.

Jose Mourinho was left fuming after a private conversation was recorded by Canal Plus and revealed the Blues boss saying: "The problem with Chelsea is we lack a scorer. I have one [Eto'o] but he's 32. Maybe 35, who knows?"

But when questioned about Mourinho’s comments after Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Galatasaray on Wednesday, Eto’o told Mediaset: "I do not have to explain anything.

"I triumphed with all the teams I played for, I'm the player I am and I want to help Chelsea to win a cup this season."

At the Turk Telekom Arena on Wednesday, Fernando Torres’ early opener was cancelled out by Aurelien Chedjou’s strike after the break and Eto’o has urged Chelsea to take advantage of playing at home in the second leg.

"It’s a good result for us," said the striker. "In the return leg, however, we must be very careful and take advantage of the home advantage. We need a goal to qualify."

Mourinho: I'd return to Inter after Chelsea

The 51-year-old stressed he is happy at Stamford Bridge but says he would be open to a move back to the club he won the treble with in 2010 if he ever left England again

Jose Mourinho admits he would consider a return to Inter if Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich no longer wanted him at Stamford Bridge.

The 51-year-old spent two seasons with the Italian club and left in 2010 having won Serie A, the Champions League and the Coppa Italia in his final campaign.

"Right now I'm fine at Chelsea, but in the future Abramovich could decide that my adventure here is over," Mourinho told Mediaset.

"That day I could go back to Italy and it's normal for me to think about Inter. But only Inter, not another Italian club."

Mourinho joined Real Madrid after his spell at San Siro, before returning to Stamford Bridge last summer to takeover from interim coach Rafa Benitez.

Schalke 1-6 Real Madrid: Ronaldo, Bale & Benzema embarrass hosts

The attacking Blancos trio were on fire at the Veltins Arena and clinically left die Knappen staring down a probable Champions League exit

Cristiano Ronaldo FC Schalke 04 Real Madrid UEFA Champions League 022614

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema pummelled Schalke into submission as Real Madrid planted one foot in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 6-1 win on Wednesday.

The Blancos opened the scoring in Germany early on when Bale's ball was flicked through die Knappen's defence by Ronaldo for Benzema to pounce and bury in the back of the net, before the Welshman grabbed a goal of his own, weaving into the box then finishing in the bottom corner.

Ronaldo had plenty of chances to add his name to the scoresheet but struggled to find the net, but finally slammed one his shots home as the second half plodded along, with Benzema converting from a tight angle on a Madrid counterattack shortly afterwards.

Sergio Ramos carved open Schalke's decimated defence with 20 minutes still remaining and Bale duly delivered the visitors a fifth at the Veltins Arena, burying the ball neatly into the back of the net.

Ronaldo capitalised on lackadaisical Schalke defending by waltzing in a sixth for Madrid with a minute left on the clock, although Klaas-Jan Huntelaar bagged the goal of the night by volleying home an absolute beauty in stoppage-time for the hosts.

The comfortable victory sees Jens Keller's men facing almost-certain elimination from Europe at the last 16 stage and eases any pressure on Carlo Ancelotti's side - who hade only won one of their last 25 visits to Germany in Uefa competition - ahead of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 18. Keller had spoken in the build-up about the Germans' need to be "brave" against a side he ranks as arguably the second best in the world - behind Schalke's Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich - but there was little his side could do about Madrid's opener.
Ronaldo's flicked pass was deflected into the area for Benzema and the Frenchman coolly slotted past Ralf Fahrmann to give the visitors a perfect start.

Schalke should have levelled a minute later, however. Draxler darted in behind the visitors' defence to direct Jefferson Farfan’s right-wing cross past Casillas, but the Spaniard launched himself across goal to palm it away, before Meyer blazed the rebound over.

Madrid made the most of that let-off and doubled their lead 21 minutes in, with Bale showing his class.
After cutting in from the right, the Welshman cleverly slalomed his way between Felipe Santana and Sead Kolasinac before squeezing a shot into the bottom-right corner, capping a wonderful solo run.
Ronaldo almost made it 3-0 just after the half-hour mark, but after jolting past Kolasinac and shooting from 20 yards, his low drive came back off Fahrmann’s right-hand post.

Ronaldo finally got a deserved goal in the 52nd minute and he netted in style as the Ballon d'Or winner dazzled Joel Matip with three stepovers before charging into the area and rifling in a left-footed effort.

A fourth arrived just five minutes later as Benzema doubled his tally for the match, passing into an empty net after playing a one-two with Ronaldo and bursting around Fahrmann, but things soon got even worse for the hosts.

With 21 minutes remaining, Bale raced on to an intricate throughball from Ramos and confidently caressed the ball past the goalkeeper with his left foot.
The visitors added a sixth for good measure as Ronaldo latched on to Benzema's pass, skipped past Fahrmann and passed home.

There was still time for Schalke to get a consolation as Huntelaar fired in a superb volleyed effort from the edge of the area, but Real had already long since killed off the tie.

'Madrid are in it to win it' - Bale talks up Champions League chances

'Madrid are in it to win it' - Bale talks up Champions League chances

The Blancos were unstoppable at the Veltins Arena on Wednesday as they annihilated Schalke in a 6-1 Champions League last-16 first-leg victory

Gareth Bale says Real Madrid are "in it to win it" after Carlo Ancelotti’s men virtually guaranteed themselves a place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a 6-1 demolition of Schalke on Wednesday.

Bale and fellow forwards Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo each scored twice as Madrid ran riot in Gelsenkirchen in a one-sided last-16 first leg.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar netted the goal of the night with a wonderful volley late on but it was of scant consolation for Schalke, who were hopelessly outplayed on a sobering night for the home crowd.

Madrid’s long-held quest to become European champions for a 10th time looks to be gathering momentum and Bale was in bullish mood afterwards, talking up the Spanish giants' chances of achieving La Decima.

The Wales international told Sky: "It was a great performance. We were fully prepared and ready for this match. It is a great result.

"It is a team game and we work very hard for each other on the pitch. I think this is a key for this team to have improved this year.

"We are in it to win it. We want to win every competition we play. We know it is not going to be easy, because there are many great teams fighting for it. But we will give it a try."

Madrid will host Jens Keller's men in the second leg of the European tie on March 18.

Barca want Mueller

The Liga champions are reportedly eager to sign Bayern Munich's Thomas Mueller in the summer as they look to strengthen ahead of the 2014-15 season.

Hot n Cold: Katy Perry and John Mayer Split … Again

John Mayer and Katy Perry's last appearance together was at the Hollywood Stands Up To Cancer event on Jan. 28. …

The days of Katy Perry calling John Mayer "darling" are over.
The pair's "Hot n Cold" romance, which began in June 2012, has chilled once again. According to multiple reports, the "Roar" songstress and the "Paper Doll" singer have ended their romance. E! News says the split, initiated by Perry, took place "within the last few days" after she returned from Europe. Us Weekly reports they had been fighting a lot recently and one issue was her upcoming Prismatic Tour, which has her stressed and will make it difficult for them to see each other.
Neither of the "Who You Love" crooners is speaking out about the split. A spokesperson for Mayer, 36, tells "The Insider With Yahoo," "No comment"; a rep for Perry, 29, says, "As always, we don’t comment on her personal life.”

The high-profile pair was one of the music world's hottest couples. However, despite their open affection for one another, their relationship wasn't without difficulty.

They quietly started dating in the summer of 2012, but split by Labor Day. The following month they reunited and, during that second shot at love, attended public events together, including President Obama's inauguration and the 2013 Grammys. However, by March it was over again.
During an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" soon after, Mayer said, "Coupling is a tricky thing."
Perry, who ended a brief marriage to Russell Brand prior to dating Mayer, said that split was related to some issues she needed to work out, which she was able to do and they reunited by June.
"I realized I could lose the person I loved and I had to deal with some things, issues I think a lot of women have," she told Elle U.K. "You can be strong in one aspect of your life but submissive in another. In relationships, it was hard for me to speak up and set boundaries. I think a lot of that was to do with the fear of loss."

With their problems sorted, they started spending time together again and really kicked things up. They released a musical collaboration, "Who You Love," in September, and did a joint interview to perform their love song. In December, she was a surprise guest as his concert in Brooklyn and they performed the duet live.

Mayer said the idea behind the song was best described as, "I love you based on the fact that I've tried to run and I'm not running and I give up."
This year, they've stepped out together for a Grammy party and the Grammy salute to the Beatles concert. They also attended a Hollywood Stands Up to Cancer event on Jan. 28, which was their last red carpet appearance together.

On Valentine's Day, Perry flashed a ring on that finger at Sunset Towers in Los Angeles, sparking rumors that they were engaged. But Perry soon jetted off solo to Europe, where she had a difficult time at Milan Fashion Week. When she returned to the States on Friday, she attended a Miley Cyrus concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and shared a smooch with the twerk-loving performer during the show.

With their relationship kaput, it will be the end for Perry's many public proclamations about her beau. The singer, who called him "darling," told Billboard he was a "genius" and she planned to give his brain to science after he died so the world could "understand how all these sparks work.'" She's also called him "incredible," "inspiring," and said she was dating her celebrity crush.
Only time will tell if this is really the end for the pair.

World leaders arrive in Abuja for Nigeria’s centenary

Flag of Nigeria
More than 12 Heads of State arrived at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s (today) centenary, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The visiting Heads of State were received at the airport by some members of the Federal Executive Council.

Those that were received at the airport include Presidents Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibi; Paul Kagame of Rwanda; Yahya Jammeh of Gambia and Prosper Bazombaza of Burundi.
President Helen Sirleaf of Liberia and the former Secretary-General of Organisation for African Union, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, who led the Tanzanian delegation also arrived in Abuja on Wednesday for the celebration.

Also arrived in Abuja were the President of Mauritania, Mohammed Ould Abdel Aziz; Ethiopian President, Mr. Hailemarian Desalegh; and the European Union President, Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso.
The Zambian Minister of Defence, Mr. Edgar Lungu, will represent the Zambian President, Micheal Saata. Israel is also being represented by its Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Yair Shamir.
An official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who did not want to be mentioned, told NAN that 42 Heads of State were being expected to attend the celebration.

Meanwhile, United States President Barack Obama has designated State Counsellor Thomas Shannon as the leader of a presidential delegation to the centenary in Abuja.
A statement in Abuja on Wednesday by the State Department said Shannon would meet with government officials and participate in high-level activities with other world leaders during the centenary.

The US official, who is expected to deliver a message from Obama to Nigeria, would also travel to Lagos for discussions on a range of issues of mutual interest and interact with Nigerian youths.
Also, President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter,  has sent a letter of congratulations to President Goodluck Jonathan on the nation’s centenary.
Burkhalter would be represented at the celebrations by the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Hans-Rudolf Hodel.

“May the ties of confidence and friendship which so happily exist between our two countries continue to flourish in the coming centenary,’’ the Swiss president wrote.
The major highlight of the week-long activities includes an international conference on peace and security in Africa on Thursday to be attended by several world leaders.
The British colonial authorities had on January 1, 1914 amalgamated what were then the separate protectorates of Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria.

The amalgamation gave birth to the single geo-political entity known as Nigeria.
The celebrations will also feature the conferment of honours on 100 Nigerians, with about 40 per cent of the awards to be presented posthumously.

Suspension: Court refuses Sanusi’s ex parte motion

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi
Hope of early return to office by the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, was dashed on Wednesday when an Abuja Federal High Court refused an ex parte motion he filed in a bid to set aside his suspension by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The court instead ordered that the President should be put on notice, and fixed March 12 for both sides to argue the motion.

In the motion he filed on February 24, the CBN governor asked the court to reinstate him, and also make an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the President, the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police from stopping or preventing him from performing the functions of his office and enjoying in full, the statutory powers and privileges attached to the office.
While urging the court to urgently grant the motion, Sanusi had argued that any delay might cause irreparable and serious damage and mischief on him in the exercise of his statutory duties as the CBN governor.

However, Justice Gabriel Kolawole on Wednesday, directed Sanusi to put the defendants on notice to enable them appear before the court to explain why the application should not be granted.
Justice Kolawole said he felt hesitant and constrained to grant Sanusi’s ex parte motion.
He explained that it was unsafe to grant far reaching interim orders, which have all the attributes of a mandatory injunction without giving the defendants a hearing.

Also, according to the judge, once the defendants have been served with the originating summons and motion on notice, the court would need to determine whether, considering the Third Alteration Act No. 20 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, the Federal High Court has the jurisdiction to entertain the suit or not.

The court said it would rather review Sanusi’s ex parte motion and as a result, directed that the motion be served on Jonathan and the other defendants by March 12.
Justice Kolawole thereafter fixed March 12 to hear the application.

Should the court determine that it has the jurisdiction to hear the suit, it could declare the suspension unlawful, and order that the plaintiff be returned to perform his duties as the CBN governor.
In the event that the tenure has elapsed, the court could also order the defendants to pay the plaintiff’s remunerations and allowances, if the suspension involved the stoppage of remunerations and allowances.

Sanusi’s motion was supported by two exhibits attached and marked Exhibits AA1 and AA2.
Exhibit AA1 was a copy of a letter dated June 2009 and titled ‘Appointment as Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria’, which stated that as the apex banks governor, he was governed by the Central Bank Act No.7 of 2007 and other terms of service applicable in the CBN.
Exhibit AA2 is a letter dated February 19, 2014, addressed to Sanusi by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, with the title ‘Suspension from Office,’ which notified him of his suspension.

Sanusi in the motion linked his suspension to the discrepancies he reported in the remittances of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to the Federation Account.

He said he discovered certain discrepancies in respect of amounts repatriated to the Federation Account from the proceeds of crude oil sales between the period of January 2012 and July 2013, following which he expressed concern and also informed the National Assembly.
The discrepancies, according to him, “affect the revenue of the federation and the national economy.”
The CBN governor stressed that in purporting to suspend him from office, Jonathan was punishing him for the disclosures he made.

Sanusi argued that his suspension was illegal because the President did not approach nor obtain the support of the Senate before suspending him.

He disclosed that some Senators, particularly former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, had informed him that Jonathan did not consult the upper legislative chamber before taking the action.

“I have been informed, and I verily believe the information given to me by Senator Bukola Saraki to be true and correct that the Senate did not give the President any support for my purported suspension and removal from office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said.
He is also insisting that his purported suspension is contrary to provisions of the CBN Act relating to the appointment and removal of the bank’s governor.

“The suspension is an “unlawful interference in the administration and management of the apex bank and is illegal, null and void,” Sanusi said.

Jonathan, during a Presidential Media Chat on Monday, had said that Sanusi was still the governor of the CBN, and that he could only revert to the Senate if he intended to sack him completely.
Jonathan also denied Sanusi’s claim that the suspension was connected to his disclosures concerning the alleged $20bn missing funds from the NNPC.

The President also hinted at a possible prosecution of the CBN governor, in the event that ongoing investigations established a clear case of fraud against him.
Sanusi had earlier on Friday obtained an order of a Lagos Federal High Court, which restrained the State Security Service, the IGP and the AGF from arresting him.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, center, speaks to skier Maria Komissarova in a hospital in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014. The 23-year-old Russian ski cross racer fractured her spine during a training session Saturday and underwent a 6 1/2 hour surgery.

Maria Komissarova, a Russian freestyle skier, was severely injured during a training accident in Sochi, and now has no feeling in her body from the waist down.
Komissarova, 23, crashed on Feb. 15 during a training run. She fractured the 12th dorsal vertebrae, located in her lower back. During emergency surgery that lasted more than six hours, a metal rod was implanted into her spine. At the time, doctors did not give a prognosis, but listed her condition as "grave but stable."

On Feb. 16, Komissarova was airlifted to Germany for further treatment, but not before she received a visit from Russian president Vladimir Putin, who wished her well.
With the passage of several days, it appears the prognosis is grim. "I do not feel my body lower than my belly button," Komissarova wrote in Russian on her Instagram account. "But I am strong and know that some day I will definitely be on my feet again."

Komissarova's accident occurred on the skicross course, at the end of a series of three jumps. While several other skiers were injured, course conditions were not blamed for the injuries.
"We are following athletes' health and safety very carefully," IOC spokesman Mike Adams said immediately after Komissarova's wreck. "We're monitoring it. I spoke to the people who are doing the monitoring, and this morning they told me they don't appear to have any difference from previous games."

There were several other injuries over the course of the Games, most notably a bobsled worker who broke both legs when he was standing in the track and was hit by a sled. But Komissarova's is by far the most severe.

"Even in these moments I continue to be happy," Komissarova wrote, "though it's very hard."
She thanked her boyfriend Alex Chaadayev (pictured together below) for his support and vowed someday to "be on my feet again."

College massacre: Outrage as death toll reaches 59

One of the victims of the Boko Haram attack in the hospital in Yobe State...on Wednesday.
The United Nations on Wednesday joined prominent Nigerians and groups in condemning the gruesome killing  of schoolchildren in the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe State by Boko Haram insurgents.

Also, some surviving victims of the attack recounted their ordeal on Wednesday.
According to  a  report by Nigerianonpoint.com, Aliyu Ayuba, a JSS 3 student, fled the scene with a bullet in his back. He said  the assailants; young men and boys in military uniforms and plain clothes, ordered the students to gather in one place and started shooting sporadically.  Aliyu added that  all his roommates were killed and burnt inside the hostel.

Another survivor said,  “I was shot in my left leg, while I was sleeping.  When I woke up, I could not walk and was later taken to the girls’ hostel where the insurgents gathered us with the female students. They selected some of the female students and went away with them, while they left some of us groaning in pain from gunshots.”

A teacher, Mallam Samaila Idris,  narrated how the attackers drove into the school premises in nine Hilux vans at around midnight on Monday; their bloody operation lasted for over five hours.
He said that those who stayed at the  school thought the assailants were military personnel, until the shooting started. Idris added that those in the staff quarters fled before the terrorists started the  fire.
Before the  National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association,  the Arewa Consultative Forum,  the Jama’atu Nasril Islam,  the Northern Elders Forum, the  President of the Senate, David Mark, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal,  and the Prelate,  Methodist Church of  Nigeria, Dr.  Chukwuemeka Uche,  reacted,  a state hospital official said the death toll had risen from 43 to 59.

“Fresh bodies have been brought in. More bodies were discovered in the bush after the students who had escaped with bullet wounds died from their injuries,”  Bala Ajiya  of the Damaturu Specialist Hospital  said late on Wednesday.

Ajiya added that   the school’s 24 buildings, including staff quarters, were completely burned to the ground by the attackers  during the onslaught.

Earlier on Wednesday, the  Senate Committee on Defence and Army  had passed a resolution directing    the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah, to relocate his office to Borno State in order to effectively monitor the war against the insurgents in the North –East.

• UN expresses concern
In New York, United States, the UN, through its   Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, expressed worry over  incessant attacks on places of learning and advised that the perpetrators be “swiftly brought to justice.”

“The secretary-general is deeply concerned about the increasing frequency and brutality of attacks against educational institutions in the North of the country. He reiterates that no objective can justify such violence,”the  global body added in  a statement.

One of its agencies, UNICEF also,  expressed outrage at the brutal killings, saying it was “unacceptable under any circumstances”

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this vicious attack on students,” its Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Manuel Fontaine, said in a statement.

“Many young lives were lost. Many more students and teachers are deprived of their right to education. Attacks on children and schools are unacceptable under any circumstances,” the UN agency added.

It said that, “When a school is under attack and students become targets, not only their lives are shattered –the future of the nation is stolen.”

• Senate committee orders  Army chief to relocate to Borno
The  Senate Committee on Defence and Army, which also expressed disgust over the attack,  passed a resolution  directing the  COAS  to relocate his office temporarily to the 7th Division of Nigerian Army in Maiduguri for urgent and appropriate steps to quell  Boko Haram’s  repeated attacks  on the North-East.

The committee also directed  the Army boss  to  adopt new methods  for  curbing the sect’s   excesses in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states.

It  passed the resolution when Minimah led top officers  of the Army to the   Senate  to defend  the  budget of the service.

The Yobe massacre was raised by a member of the committee, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, through a point of order predicated on Orders 42 and 102 of the Senate Standing Rules.
The committee, in a two-page statement containing the resolution,  explained that,  it came up with the decison after a two-hour brainstorming session with the COAS  on the way out of the Boko Haram menace.

The committee led by Senator George Sekibo  also resolved that  all schools and health institutions in the country should be provided with special security.

It gave express approval to the 2014 budget of the   Army  and told the COAS  that what was of utmost priority to it now was  stemming the killings in the North-East   and not the budget details.
The committee also called on  Jonathan to rise up to the challenge by mobilising resources for the Armed Forces to fight the  insurgents decisively.

• Mark, Tambuwal flay killings
Also in Abuja,  the Senate President,  through a     statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh, condemned  “the gruesome murder in cold blood” of  the students, saying  Boko Haram  had no justification for their action.
He said,  “This open declaration of war on everybody, especially defenceless students, cannot be justified. This is inhuman, it is animalistic and barbaric. It is unthinkable that this is happening in Nigeria.
“It is also curious that under an emergency rule when security operatives should be on red alert,  mayhem still persists. Honestly, this calls for soul searching and I believe the security authorities must rise to this challenge.”

Mark sympathised with the  government and people of Yobe State, especially the families of the bereaved.
Also, Tambuwal called on the military to change its tactics since it was becoming clear that the Boko Haram terrorists were operating at a pace faster than  its operatives.

He described the killing as “ignoble, wicked and horrendous,” saying the   best way to console the  families  of the victims was  to go after the attackers and bring them to justice.
Tambuwal, in a  statement   by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Mr.  Imam Imam,   expressed  surprise that the insurgents were now turning to “softer targets.”
He   added that  authorities were already “ running out of excuses.”

Part of the statement reads, “While we must all join hands to bring this insanity to an end, we must however bear in mind that we are running out of excuses in our responsibility to our citizens.
“We in the House of Representatives feel the grief and pain of the families of the victims. In this their hour of need, we will stand with them hand-in-hand, shoulder to shoulder.

“We assure them that as brothers, we will continue to confront headlong, the threats of terror facing our nation, and we know we will come out stronger, and victorious.”

Also in Abuja, the   National Human Rights Commission canvassed an open and transparent trial in a court of competent jurisdiction for those found to be responsible for the killings.

Describing the  massacre as “dastardly, barbaric,   senseless  and horrific,”  it   expressed its readiness   to continue to work towards resolving the security challenges in parts of the North.
“The commission has been proactive in human rights monitoring, protection and promotion and will do everything within its mandate to ensure that Nigerians whose rights are violated can have redress through the commission,”  said  its Executive Secretary, Prof. Bem Angwe.
Angwe called on the relevant authorities to urgently put machinery in place to ensure that the families of those who survived the attack and those of the deceased  were given   social and economic support.

• FG must live up to expectations – NBA,  ACF, JNI, NEF,
The  NBA, on its part, asked  the government  to live up to its constitutional responsibilities by protecting the lives of Nigerians.

“We condemn this callous carnage, and we hereby reiterate the hallowed provision of the 1999 Constitution which provides that the security, protection of live and property is the primary duty of the government,” the association said in a statement  by its President, Mr. Okey Wali (SAN).

In  the statement titled,  “Mr. President, stop this carnage,”  the association added,   “We appreciate the fact that confronting this scourge of insecurity requires collective leadership at all levels but   we call on the President,  the service and security chiefs and governors of the affected states to intensify efforts in addressing the increasing security challenges that we are currently facing in Nigeria.”
In its reaction, the Pan-Northern socio-cultural organisation, the  Arewa Consultative Forum,    said the killing of the pupils  was a  “most cruel and gruesome act.”
The forum wondered why the attacks on schools and villages in the North-East had continued   despite the state of emergency in the zone.

It said the massacre of the students was completely against the tenets of Islam for which  Boko Haram  claimed to be representing.

The   body, in a  statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammadu Ibrahim,   appealed to the sect to embrace the Federal Government’s call on dialogue.
It also  called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, provide adequate  security in  Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

The  Sultan  Sa’ad Abubakar lll-led JNI   asked the Federal Government to wake up to its responsibility of protecting Nigerians and stop playing politics with human lives.
The JNI,  in a statement by  its Secretary-General, Dr. Abubakar Aliyu, said   the attack  on innocent  pupils was  condemnable, considering  that it came   barely a few days after similar incidents in  Bama, Izge, Malari  in Borno  State.

While urging Muslim clerics to pray and fast over the continued  insecurity in the country, the body  called on the government to probe the  latest attack.

It said, “As always,  JNI will not be deterred nor will it overlook things as they unfold, especially over the repeated wicked acts of terror being unleashed on the Muslims, hence JNI received with shock and distress the senseless killings at the FGC in  Buni Yadi by criminals.

“We  expect the Federal Government  to wake up to its responsibility of protecting lives and property of Nigerians, especially  in the North -East and stop its  diatribe.

“The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the  JNI calls on all Imams in their respective mosques to commence Al-Qunut (special supplication during human or natural catastrophe, observed during the five daily prayers for ease and relief).  The generality of Muslims are also implored to fervently pray for the restoration of peace and security in Nigeria, bearing in mind that without Nigeria there will be no Nigerians.”

The Islamic body expressed concern over the continued killings despite the state of emergency and the numerous checkpoints currently in place in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states and other parts of the north.

The JNI  said   the  perpetrators of the killings   must  be fished out.
The spokesman for the NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi,   said the attack on the college could have been avoided if the government had taken  the advice given by the group  in 2012 seriously.
He argued  that since  the battle against the insurgents was not a conventional one,   conventional methods were not likely to yield  results.

Abdullahi said, “Even  the world’s greatest powers find it difficult to win this kind of war in the North-East. Government must look at the root causes of this insurgence.
“This is a human problem and if it is a human problem, it is human beings who will sit around a table to discuss this issue. These killings are senseless and we condemn them.”
The   Methodist Church, through its Prelate,    Uche,   expressed ‘great shock and sadness’ over the attack on the  college.

In a statement by    the Church’s Media and Public Relations Officer, Rev. Oladapo Daramola, the Prelate said   he  was  “praying for the families of the   children who were killed   and all others traumatised by this  horrendous crime.”
The statement added, “The targeting of children is heinous and unthinkable. An event like this reminds us of our common humanity, regardless of religious beliefs, ideological differences or ethnic sentiments.

“This was a senseless loss of innocent young lives, especially since schools should be sanctuaries for our children. These children are innocent, full of life and promise but cut down in a hail of bullets in a preventable act of terror.”

The church warned that  “until the promoters of these satanic events are unmasked and brought to book, these attacks may continue unabated.”

The Big Questions for Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman in 2003. (Vera Anderson/WireImage)

There is perhaps no living lion of screen acting who inspires as much respect as Gene Hackman, a man of whom it has been said, he never gave a bad performance. For the past decade, however, the screen has had to soldier on without him; it has now been 10 years since the actor made his last film, 2004's "Welcome to Mooseport."
So what's he been doing since we last saw him? Living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife of 23 years, Betsy, and writing novels. His latest publication is  "Pursuit," a taut thriller about a Missouri cop who sets out on a desperate manhunt after serial killer abducts her daughter.
We spoke to Hackman, 84, by phone from his New Mexico home about the book, his new life as a writer, and the big question: when will his fans see him again.

So what made you decide to start writing novels? "Pursuit" is your second solo writing. How did you get into this rat race?Actually, I started with a fellow who I knew in Santa Fe, where we live, a friend who actually was a marine biologist. We were having lunch one day, talking about what we were reading and that kind of thing. Then we said, "Why don't we write a novel?" you know, like a lot of people do. We got together, it was a difficult process writing with somebody else, but we did it. We wrote, I think, three books together.

'Pursuit' by Gene Hackman.
How's it been writing solo?
I think I probably like it a little better. I feel like it's my responsibility and it's my sense of what's going on and my poor writing or whatever. It seems to work better for me. I've spent my life, actually, with other people trying to create and it's kind of a different process and kind of exciting in a way.

In acting you're so dependent on the director, the editor, the script, so many other things; but in a novel, it's all you, start to finish. Is that liberating?
It is. In a sort of way it is liberating because you don't have a director right there at your elbow giving you a little nudge now and then or telling you how he thinks you should pronounce a certain word or emphasize a certain phrase or whatever. Many times it goes against the grain, you know? You have to have an ego to be an actor, you really do. I think that compared to the writing it's liberating in a strange way. I know that I'll never be the writer as successful as I was as an actor, but in some ways it's maybe more creative.

How does creating a character as a writer compare to creating a character as an actor?
It's kind of a peculiar thing. I have to go back to my early days as an actor when my first or second professional job was in improvisational theater. In improvisation, one of the cardinal rules is not to deny what the other person on stage has given you. So you have that always on your mind; to take what they have said and expand on it. When I began doing television in the early days and feature films, I always had great respect for the author's intent and I never wanted to change that, even though there were times where you would like to expand on what somebody says. But I tried to put that behind me in some ways because the spur of the moment is not always the best way to proceed creatively, I don't think. What is your writing process? Do you do it at a certain time of day?
Yes. Always in the morning. I can't write past two o'clock in the afternoon. If I do, then I'm up all night. I have a little office, you might call it. It's just a writing desk and a pretty comfortable chair. I write longhand and I go back and I go over it I don't know how many times and I hand it to the professor and she types it up. Then we go over it a number of times and get a little bit of a critique from the wife and like that.

How did the germ of "Pursuit" come to you?
Well, in the previous book that I had written on my own, it took place in and around Santa Fe, where I lived, in New Mexico. I just thought I would expand my horizons a little bit and do this one in Missouri. "Payback at Morning Peak" was fun to do because it was oh, I don't know, childhood dreams and that kind of thing, where the next book, "Pursuit," was maybe a little more serious.

Your book is built around a very memorable, tough as nails female cop who is also the target of the story's villain. How did she come together?
I started with wanting her to be a strong woman, a little unusual if you will, in that she was handy. She was physically handy and kind of mentally sharp and I liked that idea that she was not in an area of a put-upon women or the frail female. She was very capable. There's so many detective stories done and they are almost all male detectives unless they are written by females. I just thought I would kind of try to stretch it a little bit and see if I could do a female. It was great fun because every time I would write something, I would have to really dig down and think about how is this going to work? Is this what a women would really do? In some ways, that was kind of helpful because it kept me on my toes.

Did your wife help with fleshing her out?
Yeah. I batted things around with her a lot. Of course, she's my savior because I write longhand and she's the typist and the wordsmith.

Your heroine seems to get annoyed with pretty much everybody that crosses her path. Is that something you relate to?
Yeah, I do. I like that in this strong woman. I like the idea that she's able to maintain some kind of professionalism and yet still speak her mind.

Did it scare you living with your psychopath character as you were writing this?
Yeah, I think that's one of the things that's exciting about writing, for me at least, is the fact that you can kind of get inside those people and kind of pull up all the stuff that you wouldn't normally be thinking about. It doesn't take you off the hook but you kind of live with them. With me it takes quite a long time, at least a year maybe a little more by the time I go through two or three edits, professional edits, but it's still fun because it's always a challenge.

How did you get inside his head and capture what was driving him?
I felt maybe these kinds of guys are dreamers and we all have dreams of course, but our dreams are usually limited by some kind of reality check and because a guy thinks because he can pluck a guitar a couple of strokes he thinks he's going to be Elvis Presley or whoever. I think that disconnect between a certain reality is kind of good for that kind of psychopath mentality.

You seem to have the details of Missouri down very well. Did you go look around the area? It feels very real.
I did. I'm a big one for trains so I took the train to Kansas City, rented a car and I drove around Missouri for four days. Went down the back roads, the rivers and the lakes. It's kind of an interesting country and I've always been fascinated by the Mississippi river although I didn't do a lot of the Mississippi in this book, but it's an interesting country and one that, not to put Mark Twain behind, but certainly was established by Daniel Boone and a lot of pioneers in American culture.

The final inevitable question: Can we hold on any hope of seeing you on the screen again?
Only in reruns.

That's it?
Yeah, that's it. I'm at a place where I feel very good about not having to work all night.

Jonathan blames terrorism on ignorance, wrong values

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan  has again mourned the pupils  of the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi, Yobe State, who were on Tuesday murdered in their sleep by Boko Haram  insurgents.
Jonathan, in a    20-minute national broadcast on Wednesday to mark the nation’s centenary, said he was deeply saddened by their death and that of other Nigerians in the hands of terrorists.
The President reassured Nigerians  that his administration would  continue to do everything possible to permanently eradicate  terrorism and insurgency from the country.

He said, “We recognise that the root cause of militancy, terrorism and insurgency is not the strength of extremist ideas but corrupted values and ignorance.

“That is why our counter-terrorism strategy is not just about enforcing law and order as we have equipped our security forces to do. It also involves expanding economic opportunities, social inclusion, education and other measures that will help restore normalcy not just in the short term, but permanently.

“I want to reassure Nigerians that terrorism, strife and insecurity in any part of Nigeria are abhorrent and unacceptable to us. I urge leaders throughout Nigeria to ensure that ethnicity and religion are not allowed to become political issues.”

He urged Nigerians to rededicate themselves to doing more to empower the youth  who, he said, were in  the best stead to protect and guarantee the nation’s heritage and future prosperity.
Jonathan said that was the cause he had chosen to champion and that  he believed he would triumph.
The President also reemphasised  that  the 1914 amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates by the British colonial authorities was not a mistake.

He said although the union might have been inspired by considerations external to Nigerians, he had no doubt that the people were destined by God to live together as one big nation.
Jonathan  described the   centenary as a significant milestone in the country’s    journey to nationhood.

He said he held the belief that the country would overcome the transient pains of the moment and eventually take its rightful place among the greatest nations on earth.
He said, “100 years ago, on  January 1,  1914, the British colonial authorities amalgamated the Southern and Northern Protectorates, giving birth to the single geo-political entity called Nigeria which has become our home, our hope, and our heritage.

“I have often expressed the conviction that our amalgamation was not a mistake. While our union may have been inspired by considerations external to our people; I have no doubt that we are destined by God Almighty to live together as one big nation, united in diversity.

“I consider myself specially privileged to lead our country into its second century of existence. And as I speak to you,  I feel the full weight of our 100-year history. But what I feel most is not frustration; it is not disillusionment. What I feel is great pride and great hope for a country that is bound to overcome the transient pains of the moment and eventually take its rightful place among the greatest nations on earth.”

Jonathan observed that like every other country of the world, “Nigeria has had its troubles and still does, having witnessed a civil war, military takeover, sectarian violence and terrorism among others.”
The President said while the nation’s centenary called for celebration, it  should also be a moment of assessment of the past 100 years and considering the best way forward.

Mercy Aigbe honored by AMVCA nomination

Mercy Aigbe is a popular Nollywood star in the Yoruba movie genre.

Ayo Falafala caught up with the actress and producer who is up for an AMVCA in the Best Indigenous Language Movie/Series (Yoruba) category.

Read the interview below:

How has the new year been so far?
2014 just started. We are in February and it’s been okay but I know that it’s going to get better. I’ve been working and featuring in other people’s movies but very soon I will go on set to do a sequel to my movie Osas omoge Benin.

We just finished the script conference last week and we are looking at April to go on location to shoot the movie. What’s prompting me to do this is because people have been asking for the concluding part of the movie. People should actually watch out for it; we’ve shot parts of it in the UK and U.S and we are going to do the Nigeria part very soon.

2014 is going to be a year of good tidings for me. It’s a year that I know God will be on my side career-wise. It’s a year that I’m sure will be memorable especially in my career. I have a nomination in the forthcoming AMVCA. My movie, Comfo was nominated in the Best Indigenous Movie category.

How does it feel to be nominated for an AMVCA?
It’s an honour for you to get nominated. It means people are watching me and they feel I’m doing some things right so getting a nomination is awesome and hopefully (I’m keeping my fingers crossed) I might get the award. But even if I don’t, I’m still grateful for the nomination.

What are your chances of winning?
I don’t know…I’m hopeful and I’ve been praying. It’s a plus for me so when I wake every morning I tell God to help me get the award. I think my category is not open for viewers to vote, it’s going to be based on judges’ decision. I don’t know whether I should celebrate that but at the end of the day, I think the best person should win.

But winning will actually mean a lot for me; I’ve gotten a couple of awards before this and I want to keep getting more because it will actually inspire me to do more and maintain a standard of excellence.

What’s your favorite DStv channel?
I’d say AfricaMagic Yoruba…but to be sincere, it’d be Style Network. I love fashion! I want to be up to date with what is happening only that my kids trouble me to change the channel to Disney.

What football club do you support?
Arsenal! Gunners for life!! It’s not because I’m a football fan but because my husband is an Arsenal fan and I have no choice. I have three Arsenal jerseys he made for me and so I have no choice even though I don’t know a thing about football but I support Arsenal because my husband and I are one. Whatever my husband loves, of course I’ve got to love so up Gunners!
