ACF, Tinubu, others hail APC registration

Buhari, Tinubu and Onu
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday approved the registration of the All Progressives Congress, thereby putting an end to the series of  political horse-trading over the ownership of  the acronym, APC.
A terse statement issued in Abuja by Mr. Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, said with the approval,  the  Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change which formed the APC,    had  satisfied the requirements for registration.
INEC  also approved the withdrawal of the individual certificates of the   three parties   and   issued   a single certificate to APC.
The statement reads: “The Independent National Electoral Commission   has approved the application by three political parties – the  ACN, the  ANPP  and the   CPC  – to merge into one, to be known as the All Progressives Congress.
“On considering the application, the commission found that the applicant-parties have met all statutory requirements for the merger, and has accordingly granted their request.
“Consequently, the commission has approved the withdrawal of the individual certificates of the applicant-parties, and the issuance of a single certificate to the APC.”
The registration drew immediate reactions  from the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, Arewa Consultative Forum,  a former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, and  the presidential candidate of the former ACN in the 2011 presidential election,Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
While the APC described  the development as victory for Nigerians, the PDP said it would not lose sleep over it.
The  APC, in a statement   by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said with its registration,  Nigerians now had an alternative to  the  ruling  PDP,   which it said had  taken  them “ for a bad ride in the past 14 years.”
It  added that its  registration   would  propel  the country to the league of top democratic nations with two major political parties.
The statement reads, “The journey has been long and tortuous. All sorts of obstacles were thrown onto  our path by anti-democratic forces, but we were painstaking, determined and unrelenting in our quest for a formidable platform that will allow our country, Nigeria, to achieve her full potential and join the league of respectable nations.
“With the approval of our merger by  the INEC and the emergence of the  APC, today (Wednesday) marks the beginning of a new dawn for our country and her long-suffering people. We thank Nigerians both here and in the Diaspora for standing by us.
“We thank the media for their fairness and we commend  the INEC for doing the right thing and for not succumbing to pressure from phantom political associations that sought to force it to circumvent the law.
“We promise not to disappoint Nigerians who have reposed much confidence in us. We say that contrary to the lies being peddled by the naysayers, we are not seeking political power for the sake of getting it, but in order to use it to empower our people and allow their long-nursed hopes and dreams to become a reality.
“And to those who have vowed to change their names if APC survives for a year, we hope they will live up to their words.’’
The party promised to unveil, in the days ahead, its membership registration plans to give all Nigerians, especially those disenchanted with the way things were  going on in the country, the much-awaited opportunity to be a part of the country’s democratic process in the true sense of the word.
‘’We will also be unveiling our plans to turn today’s hopelessness into a time of great opportunities, to reverse the downward slide in our socio-economic development, and to ensure that every Nigerian benefits from the commonwealth, instead of the present situation in which a few fat cats are milking the system dry at the expense of the citizenry,’’ it said.
One of the  founders of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said the registration by INEC signalled  “the commencement of a new phase in the struggle to bring true democratic change to Nigeria.”
Describing the coming together of the ACN, CPC and ANPP as not just a merger, he said  “this is    the first   ever merger in the history of Nigeria and it represents a paradigm shift in our  politics.”
Tinubu, who congratulated the ACN, CPC and ANPP governors as well as  other leaders of the APC for making the registration possible, however,  challenged all progressive politicians    to “ rise up to answer the call of history to liberate our people.”
He also  hailed  “millions of Nigerians who stood by us during the long process to form the  APC,”  and the leadership of INEC “for this positive pronouncement.”
“Nigerians must give INEC a pat on the back for complying with the law of the land. What INEC has done is to follow the constitution and the electoral act to the letter. We hope INEC will continue in this spirit of independence and respect for the rule of law in all its future operations, “ Tinubu said in a statement by his media aide, Sunday Dare.
A co-founder   of the  APC and the presidential candidate  for the CPC  in the last presidential poll , Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, said he would not react now on the registration  because  the National Chairman of the  new party, Chief Bisi Akande,  had yet to brief him.
“ The general cannot react to the registration now because he is yet to be briefed by our  national chairman , Chief  Akande. So until  the general hears from the national hierarchy of the party, he will not comment on the registration of the party. He will talk to the press as soon as he is well informed from the national level,” said  Buhari’s  spokesman, Yau Darazo.
Ribadu also welcomed the registration   and charged members of the APC to strive hard  for the ultimate goal of dislodging the PDP.
In  a statement in Abuja, he congratulated key players in the ACN, CPC and ANPP  “for  setting  their personal interests aside  in order to allow for  the mutation of a pan-Nigerian party that can provide a credible alternative to the ruling party”.
The statement by his  media aide, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz,  quoted him as  saying, “Like millions of Nigerians from all over the country, I am immensely delighted over the successful registration of the All Progressives Congress by INEC.”
According to him, the registration of the party by the electoral body “is not the end but the beginning of the end of misrule and cluelessness” by the PDP.
The  former CPC also threw its weight behind the INEC  decision, saying it had  given Nigerians a choice between “good and evil.”
“Today(Wednesday) Nigerians now have a choice between good and evil. Now that the APC has been registered, genuine choice has been put before Nigerians. For the very first time, Nigeria and Nigerians have now been put at the driver’s seat of their destiny, it said through its  ex-National Publicity Secretary, Rotimi Fashakin.
On its part, the ACF  said  the registration of  APC  would enhance the growth of democracy in the country.
Its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani,   told one   of our correspondents that   any democracy without a viable opposition was as good as a fraud.
“The registration of  the APC as a political party is a healthy development needed for the growth of democracy, especially when regard is paid to the fact that any democracy without a viable alternative platform is a sham,” it said.
However, the PDP which   also welcomed the  registration,    said the APC    was  not a threat  to its dominance of the nation’s political scene.
“The registration of the new party poses no threat to the PDP. The ruling party still maintains its preeminent position and enjoys the widest popularity and acceptance among Nigerians across the country,”  its Acting National Publicity Secretary,  Mr. Tony Okeke, said  in a statement.
The PDP added, “With the registration of the APC, Nigerians now expect the leaders of the opposition party to eschew all forms of bitterness and desperation and desist from politics of propaganda which characterised their former parties.”
According to the PDP, Nigerians would like to see a  “vibrant opposition” that   would be constructively engaged in  issues of governance   instead of overheating the polity.
One of the groups that almost thwarted APC’s registration, the  African People’s Congress   held an emergency  meeting, barely 30 minutes after  INEC  issued its statement approving the new party.
The  African People’s Congress  which will on Thursday (today) issue  a statement on the APC registration,  may have  assembled  a  legal team to fine-tune the suit it filed at a Federal High Court, Abuja challenging  its non-registration by INEC.
“We are aware of INEC’s decision. We are currently meeting on it.  We will come out with a press statement tomorrow (today) and you will hear our appropriate response,” its  National Legal Adviser,   Mr. Kingsley Nnadi, told  one of our  correspondents in Abuja.

Rivers Assembly leader arraigned for attempted murder

Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Chidi Lloyd (third left) being led to the court in Port Harcourt...on Wednesday.

AFTER eight days in police custody, the Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Chidi Lloyd, on Wednesday, finally appeared before a High Court in Port Harcourt.
Lloyd, arraigned on six counts of attempted murder, conspiracy, assault and malicious damage, arrived at the court about 10.52am accompanied by riot policemen and other security operatives.
Clad in blue attire, the lawmaker limped as he entered the court premises, supported by two unidentified persons.
The offence of the PDP lawmaker, who was reportedly involved in the fracas in the State Assembly on July 9, 2013, the prosecution said, was contrary to Section 320 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 37 laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.
Lloyd allegedly hit his fellow lawmaker, Mr. Michael Chinda, with a fake mace during a fight at the Assembly chamber.
During the hearing, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Donald De-wigwe (SAN), objected to the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Worgu Boms’ plea to take over the criminal proceeding.
De-wigwe argued that Boms could not take over the court proceedings since there was no proper arraignment of the accused before the court.
De-wigwe said, “Judicially, the argument does not stand. It is not a law of today. The issue is that whether or not there is a criminal proceeding before the court. Until plea is taken, there is still nothing for the attorney-general to takeover.”
Referring to legal authorities to defend his argument, De-wigwe said the attorney-general’s attempt to take over the criminal proceeding of the court was premature.
Boms had earlier noted that Section 211 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, empowered him to take over the case.
Noting that the measure was necessary in the interest of justice, the Attorney-General insisted that the alleged offence was against the state.
He added, “I stand here by the powers conferred on me by Section 211(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution to take over the prosecution of the matter between the Commissioner of Police and Chidi Lloyd.”
Also, Lloyd’s lead counsel, Mr. Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN), who objected to the appearance of De-wigwe and other lawyers for the prosecution, explained that as private lawyers, they needed to obtain a fiat from the state Attorney-General to prosecute the matter.
Nwofor said, “I object to De-wigwe’s appearance for prosecution. He is not a police officer, but a private practitioner. The law requires that for a private practitioner to appear in a criminal charge by the Commissioner of Police, he should tender a fiat from the Attorney-General of the state.
“I urge the court to expunge the appearance of all the lawyers announced by the SAN, except J.C.A. Ideachaba, a Superintendent of Police, who filed the information.”
He argued that the letter presented to the court by De-wigwe was not enough as far as the law was concerned.
De-wigwe, however, disagreed saying the state Commissioner of Police initiated the charge not the state Attorney-General.
Justice Nyordee adjourned the case till August 6, 2013 to rule on the submissions of the opposing counsel as it concerned the declaration for a takeover of the criminal proceedings by the Attorney-General.
Meanwhile, there was tight security at the court premises as security operatives frisked all that entered the courtroom.

The coordinator of the event Paul Bassey told journalists in Lagos that by agreeing to subject the student winners to a rigid coaching programme by some of the best coaches in the land, MPN has once again pioneered a programme that is worthy of emulation.

One of the coaches invited for the programme is Solomon Abari, the NIS Director of coaching and one of the coaches who guided Nigeria to gold medal in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Also on the card is veteran athlete and coaching guru Armelia Edet, Nigeria’s Chief Athletics coach for so many years.

Armelia was all praise for the programme saying that her dream is revolved around events like this. ‘’…….Until we start to not only catch, but coach them young, then we have not started. I am excited, I will give my all, but we should be ready to build on this initial attempt, by regularly updating their knowledge.

Akwa Ibom State Director of Sports Coach Aniedi Dickson said this is a programme that will benefit the state no end as they prepare for the upcoming National Sports Festival for u-17 athletes.

“……I am into consultations with the organizers of the programme to also allow my coaches benefit from the training programme that will be handled by experienced and tested coaches” the Sports Director said.

Students that will take part in the programme will benefit from the provision of spike shoes and other apparels that they will “ keep and train with

“…..We are taking them to the U. J Esuene stadium in Calabar where they will train on tartan tracks for the first time, use starting blocks and so on. In fact the coaches may spend a whole day teaching them how to get used to and run with spike shoes” Mr Bassey joked.

1,936 lives lost to road accidents between January and June — FRSC

accident-crash_0ABUJA—FOLLOWING the alarming rate of motor accidents and deaths on the nation’s high ways, the Presidency is partnering with the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, to check the wanton loss of innocent lives, even as the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, said no fewer than 1,936 lives were lost to road accidents between January and June this year.

The commission’s Public Education Officer, Mr. Jonas Agwu, released the statistics in Abuja, while presenting the half year report of the FRSC’s operations in 2012 in Abuja.
To this effect, the Presidency and RTEAN are mapping out strategies to jointly sanitise Nigerian roads to make driving pleasurable and to save lives
In line with the new partnership, the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Youths and Students Matter, Jude Image and the President of RTEAN, Musa Shehu, held a strategic meeting at the headquarters of RTEAN in Abuja.
While speaking on the partnership, Image listed the areas of collaboration to include checking of underage driving and curbing driving under the influence of intoxicants by commercial drivers.
Image said: “While we quite agree with the fact that some are unavoidable accidents, those that are manmade have been attributed to the fact that most of our brothers that are involved in such accidents are either under the influence of alcohol and other negativities, ranging from Indian hemp and all the rest.
“I believe very strongly that we can get this sanitised when it starts with us and the best set of persons to get this done are our parents and particularly the new leadership of RTEAN which we expect to provide a new leadership style.
“We have equally come to assure them that we are going to partner together and work together because it involves young people and involves Nigeria as a country and they have the assurance of Mr. President to partner with them.”

Obesere, Dr Sid, Sound Sultan pull surprise performances

D'banj-and-Olamide On Saturday July 28, 2013  the 8th leg of Star Music Trek held at the Abeokuta Sports Complex, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Main headliner D’banj and wildly-loved rapper Olamide were the stars of the night, with crowd pullers Dr SID, Sound Sultan, Obesere and others going beyond limits to put up a show fans will not forget in a hurry.
For 45 minutes, cheered on by the appreciative crowd, Dr SID’s motley selection of songs kept the crowd going, fuelling anticipation of even more thrilling performances from other artistes during the concert.
Accompanied briefly by fast rising rap artiste XBUSTA, Dr Sid’s fast paced act was another crowd winner.
And if the crowd was extra appreciative of the artiste perhaps it was because his fans knew that they would have just one more chance to meet him on The Trek in 2013; the multitalented act has confirmed that he will be performing at the Grand Finale on August 10, 2013.
There’s no doubt that fast rising rap star Olamide has an extremely promising future as he stormed the stage to remind his fans why his popularity has waxed stronger ever since releasing his debut album in 2011.
The young artiste who is gradually carving a dominant niche for himself in the Nigerian music industry gave the performance of a lifetime, with eager fans -who had been waiting patiently for him- rushing from the every angle of the grounds and surging toward the stage.
The rap star could not have asked for a more loyal army as the crowd ensured they kept him weaving back and forth on the center stage and down the ramp, churning out verse after verse to the delight of his fans.
D’banj proved the ultimate crowd pleaser, placing his set in the crowd’s hands and urging them to ask for any song they wanted him to sing.
His aim, he claimed, was to please, as he sang every song his fans requested, bringing back many fresh memories right from his Mo’hits days.
Popular fuji crooner Obesere, utilized his 45 minutes with a dramatic performance of some of his greatest songs. Accompanied by his gorgeously dressed dancers, the artiste was a fitting crown to an exciting night.
The Star Music Trek has visited FESTAC, Lokoja, Owerri, Enugu Nnewi, Aba, Nnewi and Asaba in its national 10-city-10-week tour with thousands of music fans entertained across the country.
Star Music Trek will also set to berth in Agege and Surulere, Lagos State.
A grand finale of the music tour will hold at the National Stadium, Surulere in Lagos on August 10, 2013.

ASUU strike: Please, “bear with us,” FG appeals to students, parents

The Federal Government has appealed to university students and their parents to be patient as negotiations are ongoing with striking university lecturers.
Briefing journalists after the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, the Information Minister, Labaran Maku, said government was worried because the disruption of the university calendar comes at a social cost to government.
“We are appealing to our people, particularly parents and children of this nation, to bear with us, to show more understanding and we pray that this type of strike will not reoccur; because the public school system suffers a lot of damage with the perennial strikes,” Mr. Maku said.
University lecturers, ASUU, have been on strike for over four weeks demanding that the government fully implement a 2009 agreement it had with the union.
The government insists it wants a renegotiation of the some parts of the agreement claiming the agreement was not signed by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
Mr. Maku said the government was very worried about the strike. He assured that the strike will soon be called off and that an “understanding will be reached soon enough to enable our students return back to school.”
“Government is very worried and concerned every time the school calendar is disrupted. It has its cost to the nation; particularly the idle time our children spend at home can lead to a lot of social difficulties.
“We don’t want school calendars to be disrupted and a lot of series discussions have been going on and we believe we should record some progress soon enough for these schools to open,” he said.
Mr. Maku noted that universities have been relatively stable since the advent of the Jonathan administration, as in the last two years “there has not been a lot of strikes until this unfortunate one and I believe we will overcome it and in the end both parties will appreciate the need to keep the school calendar stable for the progress of our country.”
He said the “government is working hard to ensure we reach an agreement to resolve this problem so that our schools can reopen”.

The Trouble Started Two Months After We Got Married…Funke Akindele

funke akindeleAnd it gets messier…Funke Akindele and Ex Husband soil each other’s image in public
Well, in a revealing chat with E-247 magazine, Funke Akindele sort of replied her husband’s interview…
Read what Funke told E24-7MAGAZINE on Friday:
That place is not for me, I have been through hell and back.
I was abused emotionally and verbally. Really, I felt we could work things out when the trouble started two months after the marriage.
But I made up my mind and shut the door of the marriage at him when the trouble was coming to me too much.
I stooped to conquer him; buried my fame and name to make him my husband, but it did not work. At a point in time, I asked if it’s not the same man that was all over me before we married.
He nearly got me off my career. He called me severally; I did not pick his calls but when he realized my silence was tormenting him, he took to Facebook.
It’s alright.
Ask him when did he come to my house last? He left me here in my rented apartment with nothing and he will just dash in and dash out. He gets abusive, caustic anytime we have a misunderstanding and often told me to my face, he’s going to his wife in Oshodi.
He sent me SMS that he has seen a buyer for his house at Adeniyi Jones for N40million. He asked me if he should sell it and that if he does, he will buy me a new car and a rent me a new apartment.
Why now? I don’t need all that, I want my sanity. I respect him to the end but he chose to treat me that way. He said he wanted to clip my wings.
After Funke ignored him, he sent her another text abusing her and calling her names.
“So you can see that he does not mean well for me,” Funke re-iterated.
Funke and Kehinde rarely spent substantial time together even at the peak of their marriage.
Both kept to hectic schedules by virtue of their chosen professions.
While Funke is often involved in back-to-back shooting on movie sets, Kehinde jumps from one construction site to another; pressing buttons for his political ambitions; and keeping dates with his wife at home and other women by the side.
Besides, Kehinde’s disturbing and haunting pasts have repeatedly stared Funke right in the face, and according to E24-7 MAGAZINE’s impeccable source, Funke learnt shockingly that her once beloved hubby was expelled from the University of Jos almost as soon as he was matriculated as a student of the ivory tower.
His admission, was faulty right from the beginning and since that first attempt at tertiary education went awry, he shut his door at education.
When he returned from Jos, he found strength in his entrepreneurial skill coupled with the influence and support of his mother, a market leader and successful businesswoman; he became an estate developer, building chains of shops in Oshodi market.
Gradually, he crept into politics and his popularity soared that he became a well-known grassroots politician and a great mobilizer.
To shore up his image, he found in Funke who has become monstrously popular with her movie, Jenifa and the sequel, The Return of Jenifa, a ready tool.
He convinced the favourite actress to lead him to the Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he had assaulted many years ago during the market women leadership tussle between his mother, AlhajaAlmaroof and the late Iyaloja General Alhaja Abibat Mogaji.
After he atoned for his ‘sins,’ he joined the train of well- wishers that went to London to felicitate with the former governor when one of his sons graduated from a university in London.
Kehinde’s lost bid to win the contract to rebuild Oshodi market really threw him off balance and that probably made him to turn the heat on his latest wife, Funke who wanted his attention.

Update from the Uniuyo Students Union President on the detained students

Greatest Nigerian Students! There has been positive developments concerning our students in prison. So far, 90% of our students have been granted bail. Authoritatively, 25 of them have been released. Thanks to the Barristers at Civil Liberty Organization and Kings Bench Chambers who have partnered with the Student Union Government to make this happen. We also commend the efforts of individual barristers hired by some parents for their wards. However, the challenge is that the bail condition on the students is high. Most of the parents are having difficulty fulfilling the bail conditions which is why a good number of our students are still in prison. I therefore plead with all the students to continue to pray for and support our remaining colleagues in prison. We will not rest until all our students are out of that hell. Also, we are still calling on the Management of University of Uyo to show a little 'sensitivity' towards our students still in prison.

Governor Godswill Akpabio expresses worry over the reluctance of French international oil firm TotalFina Elf to relocate its Nigerian headquarters to Uyo

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has expressed worry over the reluctance of French international oil firm TotalFina Elf to relocate its Nigerian headquarters to Uyo, Akwa Ibom capital, and called for a change of attitude.
Speaking at a Gala Night his government organised for Mr. Francois Sastourne, the Consul-General of the French Embassy in Nigeria, Chief hinted that the company drilled 75 per cent of its crude oil in the country from the shores of Akwa Ibom.
“Already at the shoreline of the state, the French companies are here. TotalFina Elf, almost 75 per cent of their operation is Akwa Ibom. I will start to report that they don’t have an office in Akwa Ibom. So, you may wish to discuss with them that to whom much is given, much is expected. We look forward to working with a lot of French companies,” Akpabio said.
Continuing, the governor told his guest: “Consular-General, we require assistance to further promote education. We have declared free and compulsory education from basic education of our children but we have opened it up to all Nigerian children resident in Akwa Ibom. Because of that, we have over 1.7 million children in just primary and secondary schools alone in a population that is less than five million. The facilities are stretched, we have built thousands of classroom blocks but we don’t have enough teachers to go round all and we need assistance in any way you can help us.
“We have built the best e-library in Africa and we need to take the facility to the nook and cranny of the state. We must ensure that every school, every community is linked so that our children can become ICT compliant. That is the only way can produce children who will be employed in the modern society.
“We want co-operation in the area of health. We are building a first-class international hospital at Itam. That hospital, I understand, is larger than the National Hospital, Abuja. But one could ask, ‘why should a state undertake such a venture?’ It is because we want to be the leading light towards Nigeria’s greatness. So, we are preparing for that day. Outside that I have mentioned other areas of cooperation, talking about the deep seaport, the repair, maintenance and overhaul facility and the need for us to have a second operator coming in to run our second five-star hotel.
“There are areas of co-operation in agriculture. We are now going to be designated as perishable goods airport by the Federal Government. Just few things for us to add, we are adding the taxi way which could also operate as a parallel runway. We are going to add a brand new international terminal which is being fabricated in Italy and then we add an underground fuel storage facility and we can go totally international.
“It is my belief that under my administration, we should have international flight from Uyo all the way to Dubai and back to Uyo. It might interest the Consular-General to know that from Dubai to Uyo is six hours and from Dubai to Lagos is seven hours. So, if you fly from Uyo, you are cutting one hour and so many people will like to travel from Uyo instead of going to Lagos.”
Responding, Mr. Sastourne expressed readiness of French Government to cooperate with Akwa Ibom Government in the area of education. His words: “As I said, education is the key to future, the key to development not only economic development but human development, total development. It is really the key that opens the door. So, we will try to improve the development of French language in the state.
“I saw the keenness to learn the French language. I saw students eager to learn the language of their neighbouring countries. We need to encourage them and help them. We will really do that. I am sure that any French company that comes here to invest will be able to do justice in the direction of financing education.
“We will also endeavour to have development exchanges between high-level education university from here and France, not only in the French language but in other fields like human science, Political Science, Engineering and whatever fields you can think of. We will like to train more Nigerians in France, have more students in terms of higher education, train the people who will nurture and make our future relationship alive,” he said.
