Jay Z and his sister-in-law,
Solange Knowles, appeared to get into an altercation on their way out of
a Met Gala afterparty in New York City last week.
TMZ
posted surveillance footage from inside an elevator at the Standard
Hotel where Jay Z, Beyoncé, and Solange were exiting a bash at the Boom
Boom Room when, all of a sudden, the DJ allegedly lost it on the rapper.
In the video, a woman understood
to be Solange, 27, aggressively confronts a man believed to be Jay Z,
44, about something, and after the two appear to exchange words — there
is no audio in the footage — she starts punching and shoving him. The
rapper, however, does not hit back. A bodyguard-type then separates the
two, but despite being restrained, Solange starts kicking her
brother-in-law. A woman believed to be Beyoncé can be seen standing next
to her husband although she never gets physically involved.
TMZ notes that the bodyguard hit
the emergency stop switch on the 12th floor (mid fight) presumably to
keep the altercation private.
It's unclear what triggered the disagreement, and reps for Jay Z, Solange, and Beyoncé have yet to comment on the matter.
The Standard released the
following statement on Monday: "We are shocked and disappointed that
there was a clear breach of our security system and the confidentiality
that we count on providing our guests. We are investigating with the
utmost urgency the circumstances surrounding the situation and, as is
our customary practice, will discipline and prosecute the individuals
involved to our fullest capacity."
Last Tuesday, Beyoncé posted a
photo alongside Solange, Lupita Nyong’o, and Sarah Paulson at the Met
Gala afterparty, smiling like nothing was wrong.
However, when the trio was photographed leaving the Standard Hotel post-fight early Tuesday morning, Solange looked visibly upset exiting the soiree ahead of her older sister and Jay Z.
The altercation is shocking as Beyoncé, Jay Z, and Solange are a notoriously tight-knit group.
Just last month, Beyoncé and Jay Z
attended both weekends of Coachella in Indio, California, to support
the R&B singer, who was performing at the festival. (Beyoncé even
came out on stage during Solange's weekend 1 gig.)
Whatever the fight was about, the family seems to have moved on.
On Saturday, Solange's son,
Juelz, watched the Brooklyn Nets beat the Miami Heat 104-90 with his
famous aunt and uncle at Barclays Center.
