Adebayor apologises for smiling picture after Tottenham hammering
The Togolese striker has rejected accusations that he was pleased Spurs had been defeated by Liverpool on Sunday, while Benoit Assou-Ekotto hit back at the club's fans
Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor has apologised for tweeting a picture that appeared to show him celebrating the side's 5-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

The Togo international posed for the snap with fellow Spurs outcast Benoit Assou-Ekotto, with the pair provoking outrage amongst fans for smiling and raising five fingers.

But Adebayor has taken to Twitter to clarify that he intended no disrespect to the north London club, with the picture having been taken before the game.

“I apologise to all Spurs fans who thought from the Assou-Ekotto picture that we were making fun out of the defeat,” he tweeted.

“That picture was taken BEFORE the game. I couldn't have possibly known the score. I would NEVER DO THAT. That pose is how I pose in all my pictures....”

The former Arsenal and Manchester City frontman then proceeded to post examples of a hand gesture that he insists was not malicious but entirely coincidental to the scoreline.

Assou-Ekotto has also defended himself, and shared a host of pictures of his own pose, but was less diplomatic than his team-mate and hit out at Spurs fans who had berated him.

Earlier he had provoked even more ire by appearing to revel in the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas on Monday, writing: “What a good Monday!”
