The world’s richest black, ALIKO DANGOTE has done it again. One of Nigeria’s biggest philanthropists, Dangote, through his foundation (Dangote Foundation) is disbursing a sum of N10 billion to reduce poverty across the nation, and the money is to go to women and youths in all the 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
The fund is to assist the beneficiaries to meet their most basic personal and family needs, and it will be in the form of one-time grant to start their own enterprises and business ventures (Baba Rafa, if you like, take your own drink paraga). While speaking at the disbursement at Lokoja, Kogi State, he said that the move was in response to the terrible level of poverty in the land and he also added that in 2011, his foundation started a cash transfer programme called the Dangote MicroGrants which transfers cash to selected poor, needy and vulnerable Nigerians (I really hope Nigerians will not do magomago for themselves in the so-called selection process, because I know my pipu when it comes to awoof).
The disbursement is to be done over a period of two years. Now the sweetest part, the fund is to focus on women, who bear the greatest brunt of poverty and squalor. Dangote also added: “Our Programme provides a one-off grant that enables recipients to grow or start an enterprise, invest in product assets, improve the health of their families, and/or take on new activities that reduce their vulnerability and enhance their economic standing. It has successfully assisted women and their families in Kano and Jigawa states.”
